Article Linker FAQ

1.  What is Article Linker?

2.  How do I use Article Linker?

3.  I have entered all the necessary information, why am I not able to get to the article directly?

4.  Why didn’t I get a full text link to my article?

5.  Why am I not finding my article?

6.  I have more questions, how can I get help?

1. What is Article Linker?

Article Linker is a time-saving tool that allows you to quickly check the availability of an article in the Sladen Library’s online or paper holdings.  This is especially helpful if you have a citation in hand, or are working from a bibliography or reading list.  If the article is available online, Article Linker will lead you to the full text.  If the article in not available online, you can check if it’s held in paper copy within the Sladen Library.  Lastly, if the library does not own the article you have the option of ordering a copy of it by filling out an article request form.  To place an order simply follow the article request links for your affiliated hospital on the Find It @ Sladen menu.

2.  How do I use Article Linker?

For Article Linker to link directly to your article you must include these elements:

  • journal title or journal ISSN
  • volume
  • start page number

      -or-
  • PMID (The 8-digit PMID number listed on citations retrieved from PubMed searches.  The 8-digit “UI” number listed on citations retrieved from Ovid Medline or CINAHL searches also works in this box.)

The more information you enter – the closer you will get to the full text of the article.  For example, entering in the article’s journal title, volume, issue, and page numbers will lead you directly to the full text, whereas just entering in the journal title will lead you to the journal’s table of contents or homepage.  You can still navigate to the article you need, but it will take a few more steps.

3.  I have entered all the necessary information, why am I not able to get to the article directly?

Sometimes, the journal publisher does not enable direct linking to the article. If you reach the home page or table of contents, you can still access the article, but you will need to navigate to it.

4.  Why didn’t I get a full text link to my article?

Either the Sladen Library does not own a subscription to online content of the particular article, or it is possible that the article is not available online.  You can check the library’s paper holdings to see if we have a copy in the library, or you may order a copy from another library by following the article request links for your affiliated hospital on the Find It @ Sladen menu.

5.  Why am I not finding my article?

There can be a few reasons why you may not be able to locate your article.

  • One item in your citation may be incorrect causing the whole search to come back empty.  If you are unsure about the accuracy of your citation, try starting with the journal title and then navigate to the article from the journal’s table of contents.
  • Make sure the information you entered is spelled correctly.
  • If “and” or “&” appears in the journal title, try searching both spellings.
  • If the article is newly published, there may be a delay in having the content available online.

6.  I have more questions, how can I get help?

Please feel free to contact the library with any questions or problems.
