To Conduct A Search:

Enter any common medical term, drug name, or drug class, and click on "Search". Select the appropriate keyword from the resulting list. This will bring up a list of matching topic reviews related to the selected keyword.

Select one of the topic reviews listed, or narrow your search by clicking on a modifier or entering a secondary search term.

Click on a heading in the outline to go directly to that section in the topic review.

Click on a reference number, in the text or at the bottom of the page, to access the associated Medline abstract.

Obtain graphics and drug information by clicking on the graphics hyperlink or any drug name within the text.

Search Example: You have a patient who is pregnant and has diabetes, and you would like to find more information on treatment options.

Once you are into the program, enter "Diabetes" in the search term field and click "Search".

A list of keywords will appear. From this list choose "Diabetes Mellitus, Type 2". The program will present a list of matching topic reviews.

To narrow your search, type "Pregnancy" in the secondary search term box and click "Enter". Click on the keyword "Pregnancy". From the list of "Most Relevant Topics", select "Management of Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus During Pregnancy".
To Print:
Full Text -- UpToDate allows you to print a limited number of individual articles for your personal educational use, provided that you include a source reference to UpToDate, and its copyright notice. Contact your administrator if in doubt about the copyright law. To print a complete topic review, click on the "Print" option in the toolbar and follow the instructions provided.
Selected Selections -- To print a selected section of a topic review in UpToDate, scroll down the text in the window until you come to the section you want to print. Highlight the section to be printed. Click on the "File" menu, then click on "Print". Indicate that you want to print the selection before sending it to print. Be sure to click on the "File" menu and then the "Print" option rather than the "Print" shortcut button in the toolbar. The "Print" button in the toolbar will print the entire topic review.
Graphics -- To print graphics, open the graphic, click on "Print" and follow the instructions.
To Make Slides From Graphics:
To make slides, you need a presentation program, such as Microsoft PowerPoint, Harvard Graphics, or Lotus Freelance. Go to a graphic in UpToDate, click on the "File" menu. Select "Open Image in Paint" which will open up a new window. In this new window go to the "File" menu, click on "Save" and follow the instructions. You may save the graphic on your hard drive or a floppy disk. After the graphic is saved, you can retrieve it when you are in your presentation program by opening the file and inserting the graphic.
