Troubleshooting Instructions

Problem / PubMed:

Users of PubMed have been reporting an occasional problem of being unable to search.  The user gets an error message in the status bar of "Done, but with errors on page" after submitting a search.

Solution:

Consider using a different browser.  This does not appear to be a problem in Internet Explorer, version 7, but that version is not supported by HFHS IT.  A better alternative is to download and install Mozilla Firefox from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/  or Apple's Safari http://www.apple.com/safari/download/.  These web browsers do not suffer from this problem with PubMed.

If you do not have administrative rights on your computer and cannot install software, you may want to consider trying these solutions:

If you are using Internet Explorer, version 6, then click on Tools, Internet Options, make sure you are on the General tab, and click the Delete Files... button, making sure you click the box to remove offline content.  Click OK and wait for the files to be deleted, click OK again to close the Internet Options box.  You must then exit all IE sessions you might have opened, restart IE, go back to PubMed and retry the search.

In addition, the PubMed people suggest two things you can do.  One, make sure your date and time is set accurately on your computer.  And two, make sure nih.gov is set to "always allow" under Per Site Privacy (to get there go to Tools, Internet Options, Privacy Tab, click the Sites Button, and the enter nih.gov and click the Allow button).

If these steps do not work for you, then please call the library and ask for John DuLong or Joseph Escribano and we will help troubleshoot the problem with you.

Problem / Remote Access to Sladen Resources:

You have forgotten your Sladen Library ID number / password and you want to access the Sladen resources from home.

Solution:

Your ID Number is usually your HFHS badge barcode number, which is located on the back of your badge.  If you have forgotten this number, please call (313) 916-2550 for assistance during business hours.

Your password is usually the first four letters of your mother's first name plus the first four letters of the place you were born.  For example, if you mother's first name is Elizabeth and you were born in Akron, then your password would be elizakro.  Note that the password is case sensitive.  If this doesn't work, please call (313) 916-2550 for assistance during business hours.

Alternatively, HFHS employees can now log in to Sladen resources using their Windows Active Directory account, that is, your HFHS corporate network account. If you currently can log into the HFHS network or HFHS Outlook email, then you can use the same ID and password to access Sladen Library online resources. Simply enter this information on the Sladen Library Proxy Server page. For those with remote access accounts already in place, you can continue to use your remote access ID and password or use your Active Directory ID and password.

Problem / Page Cannot Be Displayed:

You get the error message that "The page cannot be displayed" in Internet Explorer or "Error - The requested item could not be loaded by the proxy" in Netscape when using Sladen Library electronic resources.  You must modify your proxy server settings. The following instructions will tell you how to change these settings.

Solution / Internet Explorer 6.x:

  1. Click on Tools, then Internet Options, then the Connections tab, and then the Lan Settings button. This will bring you to the Local Area Network (LAN) Settings box.
  2. Make sure you DO NOT have a check mark in the box next to "Use automatic configuration script."
  3. Make sure you DO have a check mark in the box next to "Use a proxy server for LAN."
  4. In the Address: box enter "proxy.hfhs.org" and in the Port: box enter 8080.
  5. Press the Advanced button to bring up the Proxy Settings.
  6. Go to the bottom and in the Exceptions area type "desoto.hfhs.org".  This is the name of the Sladen Library proxy server.
  7. Click OK in the Proxy Settings box, then click OK in the Local Area Network (LAN) Settings box, and then click OK again in the Internet Options box.
  8. Retry the link again by pressing the Refresh button of your browser and it should work.
  9. If you still get the same error message, then close all your Internet Explorer browser sessions and restart an Internet Explorer session.  Navigate to the page you had a problem with, and you should then be able to use it without another error message.

Solution / Netscape and Other Browsers:

Internet Explorer is the official HFHS supported browser.  If you are using a different browser, you will have to search for the proxy settings in the Options or Preferences, and point to "proxy.hfhs.org" at port 8080.  Make sure you include an exception for "desoto.hfhs.org."

If you are unable to change the settings of your browser, then your computer is locked down. You will have to contact the HFHS Information Technology Help Desk at (248) 853-4900, and ask for their help in making the modifications to your proxy server settings.
