Accessing Full-Text Articles From Ovid

There are more than 400 full-text journals available on the Ovid Online system through the Sladen Library.    View a Complete List of Sladen Full-Text Journals.

I.  Ovid Full-Text provides a fast and convenient way to access the full-text of journal articles directly within a Medline, Cinahl or PsycINFO search.  To use this feature:

  • Perform a search in Ovid on the topic of your choice.
  • In order to gain access to all of the full-text resources the Sladen Library offers, please refrain from limiting your search to "Full Text."  The "Full Text" limit no longer provides results which truly reflect our full-text holdings.  Instead, to narrow your searcht o materials only available through the library, please use the "Local Holdings " limit.
  • The Results screen lists the citations resulting from your search.
  • Below is an example of an article citation as displayed in Ovid:

1)  Click on “Ovid Full Text” on right side of the citation.

  • The article will open in the same window.
  • Use the options provided in the toolbar above the article title to email, save, or print.  Also, if a printable PDF version of the article is available, a link will be present to the right of the article title.

-OR-

2)  Click on the red   button on the citation.

  • Clicking on this button will display the “Find It @ Sladen” menu which lists the various services available for the citation you are viewing.
  • The “Find It @ Sladen” menu opens in a new browser window. (In order to view the menu, you may need to ensure that pop-ups are not blocked by your browser).  When you choose a service from the menu another window will open, which can be resized to preference.  Usually, there are not more than three to four windows open at a time.
  • If full text is available, click on the “GO” button under “Is it online?” to access the article.

Important!  If at any time you wish to return to your search results, use Ovid’s internal navigation links at the top of each page.  Closing the window or using your browser’s “Back” button could result in losing your entire search.

II.   Journals @ Ovid Full Text is a searchable database of all articles in the entire Ovid journal database.  There are two ways to search this database, performing a search as you normally would within Ovid or by browsing an A-Z journal list.  Some benefits of using Journals @ Ovid Full Text include the ability to browse a journal’s table of contents, classified ads and announcements as they are found in the print journal.  To begin:

  • Log in to the Ovid Online system.
  • At the “Choose a Database” screen, select the Journals @ Ovid Full Text link.
  • From the search screen, you can perform a search as you normally would.

-OR-

Select the “Browse Journals” link located to the right of the search box

  • You can browse journals by subject or using the A-Z list.
  • The journals which the Sladen Library subscribes to are indicated by a book icon located to the left of the title.
  • Choosing the “Issue List” link below the journal title opens a listing of available issues. From here, you can browse the table of contents of a particular issue.
  • If the library offers full text to an article the “Ovid Full Text” link that was described above will appear with the article’s citation.

It is important to remember: This database only searches Ovid journals.  For a comprehensive search, you may want to use Medline or Cinahl with no full-text limits.

III.  Searching Your Journals @ Ovid retrieves citations to articles located in Ovid journals which the Sladen Library has a subscription to. Therefore, full-text access is guaranteed.  To begin using this database:

  • Log in to the Ovid Online system.
  • At the “Choose a Database” screen select the Your Journals @ Ovid link.
  • Search this database as you would Journals @ Ovid Full Text (instructions above).

Finally, when you are finished using Ovid, please click the “Logoff” button at the top of the Ovid page in order to release the license and allow others to use this resource.

Please contact the Sladen Library at 313-916-2550 if you experience any problems or have additional questions about using Ovid Full Text Journals.  For questions about using “Find it @ Sladen,” check out our handy FAQ sheet.
