Accessing Full-Text Articles From PubMed

Save time by retrieving full-text articles within your PubMed search session!  Find It @ Sladen in PubMed connects PubMed users to the full text of articles or document ordering options available from the Sladen Library through the click of a button.

Getting Started

In order to access library services within your PubMed search, you must enter through the link provided on the library's website or bookmark this URL:

http://desoto.hfhs.org:2048/login?url=http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez?holding=miuhfdlib_fft_ndi&otool=miuhfdlib

As with most library resources, off-campus users should first sign in with their library-assigned remote ID and password if they wish to view Find It @ Sladen links from home.  Remote access instructions are available.

Find It @ Sladen in PubMed: Basics

The   button appears when viewing the abstract of a citation, on the right side of the screen above the "Related Articles" box.

Click on the  button to view the Find It menu, which lists services available for the citation.  These services could include the following:

  • Online full-text access
  • Paper holdings information
  • Sladen Library help
  • A pre-filled ILLiad document request form

The pre-filled ILLiad document request form is an exciting enhancement the library is happy to now offer. To make the most of this feature, register for an ILLiad account at http://tinyurl.com/sladendoc. With an ILLiad account, you can place an order for an article the library does not own directly in your PubMed search without having to fill out additional forms or re-enter citation information. ILLiad also gives you the ability to track your orders online and receive automatic email updates.

See an example of the Find It @ Sladen menu in PubMed:

If full text is available, click on the red "GO" button in the "Is it online?" section. The full article will open in a new window. Make sure pop-ups are not blocked by your browser since this could prohibit articles from opening.

Troubleshooting

  • If your search fails to return any Find It @ Sladen buttons, make sure you have entered PubMed through the designated links on the library's website or the URL listed above. Also, be sure you are looking at the abstract view of the article.
  • If accessing PubMed from home, remember to first log-in with your library-assigned remote ID and password. Choosing the appropriate link from the "Medline & More" page will prompt you to log-in.
  • If a journal requires an ID and password in order to access full text content, these will be listed on the Find It menu. Please contact the library at 313-916-2550 or email if you are prompted for an ID and password and one is not provided.
  • By default, PubMed may also post full text icons from individual publishers. Do not click on these buttons. The Find It @ Sladen button is the only one monitored by the library. Using other icons may prompt for additional payment or require IDs and passwords the library does not have.
  • If you have any more questions about using Find It @ Sladen, please check out our handy FAQ sheet.
